Attention Students

The Heath Protection Surveillance Centre is warning all students to ensure that they have the MMR vaccine following outbreaks of mumps in a number of Third Level Colleges.

All individuals less than 25 years of age are recommended to ensure that they have had two doses of MMR. If they do not have vaccination records documenting two doses they are advised to seek MMR vaccination from their GP or other health provider (e.g. student health service for students). The MMR vaccine is free to this age group. Payment for the GP visit may be required for non medical card holders.

Individuals older than 24 years are usually immune from mumps as a result of natural infection. However, if individuals in older age groups wish to receive MMR vaccine this can be obtained from the GP. There is no upper age limit to the MMR vaccine.

DBS has made arrangements with the Aungier Street Medical Centre (across the road from the Aungier Street building) telephone: 01-4005708. A reduced fee of €40 per consultation is charged on production of a valid DBS student card. The Clinic is open Monday to Friday: 8.30am-6.30pm and Saturday: 11am-3pm. There is an appointment system in operation but urgent cases will be seen without appointment.

Mumps Information for 3rd Level Students

Many Irish universities and colleges have had major mumps outbreaks during the past few academic years. Students between 17 - 24 years were most affected because many of them only ever recieved one dose of MMR vaccine. MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Two doses are needed to protect against infection.
